“It was the best and worst feeling,” author Laura Noel told NPR’s Kelly McEvers in an interview recorded at her home in Ludlow. “On the one hand, it was a tremendous boost to my ego, and I was elated. And on the other hand, I was ashamed because I had my family to look after at home.”
A reader contacted Noel after a conversation on Facebook about her recent memoir, “Shooting for the Moon: A Personal Memoir,” which tells the story of her parents’ divorce and battle to raise her four children in a small town in southeastern Kentucky.
“We talked about the book and talked about my life and my children,” Noel said. “And she said, ‘I’m going to tell you a secret. You won the Jane Addams Award for your memoir.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s incredible,’ but also I was horrified. It was just a shock.”
An anti-gun activist in New York City, Noel’s mother is a self-proclaimed “gun control activist.” Their conversations about gun control have been what Noel and her siblings refer to as “Sister Act” conversations.
“We’re all kind of in the same boat, and so it was just… I didn’t want to put her in that position,” Noel said. “She was so supportive, she’s my hero, and she’s my rock and my support. So, I didn’t want to make her feel like a horrible mother if I won this award.”
Noel called her mom that night to let her know of her win. “I put my phone away and went to bed,” she said. She remembered thinking the next day, “I don’t think she’s going to be happy.”
Noel said her mother came up with a plan to take their children on a trip, rather than a big event, so they wouldn’t be overwhelmed. “She worked all this out, and I heard what she was doing over the next two or three weeks,” Noel said.
