The story of Autodesk AutoCAD began in 1970, when the founder of Autodesk, Alvy Ray Smith, was working on his own at the General Electric Company, developing a high-performance family of engineering drafting systems. A key part of the system was an algebraic geometry engine called Xerox MENU that developed and presented the three-dimensional (3D) surfaces of solids, surfaces of revolution, and arbitrary curves. The geometry engine and its associated drawing libraries became the basis for Smith’s next project, a document preparation system called PrePre, and they later became the heart of AutoCAD.
As the user began to create 2D and 3D drawing projects on the desktop of the GE systems, Alvy Smith and his team realized they needed to give users more functionality in the 2D realm and make it easy for users to share their work with others. The system was a hit, and the user base grew. But as the popularity of AutoCAD grew, so did the complexities of running a drawing application in a personal computer (PC). Eventually, there was a need to create a company that could support the thousands of users around the world.
Starting in 1977, Alvy Smith and a group of engineers created a desktop application, sold at retail as Xerox DRAW, that could run on personal computers. The technology underpinning the new system was the same as that used in the GE systems, and the new application included many features not available in other applications. Alvy Smith and his team recognized that the technology underlying the new application could also be applied to a new desktop system to develop the next generation of the desktop application. This led to the first product of the AutoCAD line, AutoCAD Drafting System.
In 1982, Alvy Ray Smith founded Autodesk. Inc., a company to develop and market the first personal computer based drafting system, Autodesk AutoCAD, that would bring the benefits of a GE-style engineering application to a PC.

Ethiopia’s top court has overturned an acquittal of opposition leader Andargachew Tsige and ordered the government to pay compensation to those who were killed in an opposition rally last year.
Last year, the Addis Ababa High Court acquitted Tsige, the former chairman of the Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO), a party that was a key player in the opposition protests that started in late 2011. A two-person panel of the Supreme Court upheld the acquittal. But on April 5, the Supreme Court ruled that “the verdict of acquittal was based on a flawed judicial reasoning.”
“We, the court, hereby confirm that the judgment of acquittal by the [high] court was factually and legally incorrect and, therefore, not in line with the law and public interest,” the statement by the top court said.
But it added that “[a]lthough the court exercises its powers under the law with an eye to safeguarding individual rights, the court understands that the political turbulence… has provided the political parties [the government] with an excuse to use arbitrary detention, imprison without justifiable grounds, assault and inflict violence against individuals.”

To access the main menu, click View -> Main Toolbar.
To access help menus, click Help.
To access the help menu for Autodesk Autocad, click Autocad.

Click the link you are provided to open the Autocad help desk help desk.
When you reach the Autocad help desk, select the subject and enter the question and answer.
Click Send.
